Harvest: the first secret to a great wine

Long before a bottle of wine reaches your glass, its destiny begins to take shape in the vineyard. Harvesting, or grape picking, is not a simple step, but a crucial decision that determines the character, quality and final profile of the drink. Did you know that not all grapes are harvested in the same way? At Vinozia, we reveal the secrets of the harvest.

Types of manual harvesting: the art of tradition

  • Manual harvesting is an ancient art and the most highly valued method for high-quality wines. It requires careful craftsmanship and is irreplaceable in vineyards with particular characteristics.

  • Harvesting in trailers (in bulk): this is faster, as the grapes are placed in large containers. The risk of crushing is greater, so it is mainly used in the production of more mass-produced wines.
  • Heroic harvesting: this is carried out in vineyards that are difficult to access, with extreme slopes or terraces where machinery cannot be used. It is a symbol of respect for the terroir and produces wines with a unique character and a story to tell.
  • Night harvesting: the grapes are picked by hand during the night so that they arrive at the winery fresher. This process is vital for white and rosé wines, as it helps to preserve their aromas and acidity.

Types of mechanical harvesting: technology and efficiency

  • Mechanical harvesting has revolutionised the sector, offering an efficient solution for large vineyards. Today, technology has significantly improved this process.

  • Vibration harvester: this is the most common type. The machine shakes the vine to detach the grapes, which are then collected by a belt system. It is a fast method that reduces harvesting time.

  • Suction harvester: a vacuum system ‘sucks’ the ripe grapes from the bunches. This technique is less common, but also focuses on large-scale efficiency.

  • Selective grape harvester: these are the most advanced machines on the market. They have sorting systems that select ripe grapes and discard waste directly in the field. This advance has minimised the main disadvantage of mechanical harvesting, improving the quality of the must.

At Vinozia, we know that every bottle is the result of a meticulous process, from the vine to the glass. The choice of grape variety reflects the character and quality of the wine. We invite you to explore our selection and discover the story behind each bottle.
